# Change automatic update settings

Both update options start on. You can stop automatic checks entirely or keep
checks while choosing when a new build downloads.

1. Open **Settings…** (⌘,) › **General** › **Software Update**.
2. Turn off **Check for updates automatically** if you want to check only when
   you ask. Or leave it on and turn off **Download and install automatically**:
   Recordstead will still show an offered build, but wait for you to start its
   download.

**Your result:** background updates follow your choice. The manual [Check for
updates](https://docs.recordstead.app/getting-started/check-for-updates) control works regardless of
these switches.
