# Check for a Recordstead update

You can check manually even if automatic updates are off.

1. Open **Settings…** (⌘,) › **General** › **Software Update**.
2. Click the circular arrow at the end of the version row.
3. Read the line below it. **Up to date** means no newer build is offered to
   you. If one is available, the row names it and offers **Update now**.

**Your result:** you know whether a new build is available for your Mac.
If the row says **Couldn't check for updates**, reconnect to the network and
try the same button again. A recording in progress holds update activity until
it ends.
