Transcribe an audio or video file you already have

A file you already have goes through the same transcription, speaker separation and summary as a live call. Nothing about the result marks it as an import.

Import files

Choose Recording ▸ Process Audio/Video Files… (⌘P). A panel titled Select Audio or Video Files opens.
Select one or more files. You can select several at once.
Before you open them, the line at the bottom of the panel says what you are about to create, so a mistaken selection is visible while it is still free to fix.
Open. The files join the queue for the workspace you are in.

Which formats

WAV, MP3, AIFF, M4A, MP4, MOV and FLAC are always available.

MKV, WebM and OGG need ffmpeg on your Mac, and Recordstead does not ship it. Check Settings › Advanced, where the ffmpeg row reads either Available or Not installed.

When ffmpeg is missing

There is no message about it, which is the thing worth knowing in advance: those three formats simply do not appear as selectable in the panel. Nothing tells you why.

If ffmpeg is missing and you need one of them, either install it yourself, as the app's own error suggests with ffmpeg not found. Install: brew install ffmpeg, or convert the file to one of the always-available formats first.

If an import fails

You get a Processing Failed notification naming the file and the reason. The recording itself is untouched; nothing is deleted by a failed import.

Result

One meeting per file, sitting in the list beside your recorded ones.
