Send the app's log with a bug report

Recordstead writes down what it did while it ran and keeps that record on your Mac for seven days. One button packs that record into a file you can attach to a bug report. This page is about producing that file; what happens to a report once it arrives is on the support page.

  1. Open Settings… (⌘,).
  2. Select Advanced.
  3. Under Diagnostics, find the Diagnostic log row and click Export.
  4. When it finishes, the confirmation offers Show in Finder.

The file is named Recordstead-diagnostics- followed by the date, and it lands in your export folder, which is ~/Documents/Recordstead until you point Settings › GeneralExport folder somewhere else.

A zip file in your export folder holding up to seven daily log files and a short report naming the version you are running, your macOS version and the settings that decide how meetings are processed.

The log is the app describing its own work: when a recording started and stopped, which processing step ran and how long it took, what failed and with what error, the names and formats of the audio devices in use, and a loudness reading for each channel every few seconds while recording.

It carries no meeting content. There is no transcript in it, no summary and no audio. Meeting titles and people's names are withheld by macOS itself and appear as <private>, so a log read by someone else does not tell them who you met or what was said.

Nothing here is sent anywhere on its own. The file is written to your own folder, and it reaches us only if you attach it to a message yourself.

HelpSend Feedback… opens a mail draft that already carries your version. Attach the zip to that draft before sending it. Say what you expected to happen and roughly when it went wrong, because the log is long and a time narrows it down.

A day with no log file is skipped rather than faked, so an archive can hold fewer than seven. That is normal on a Mac where the app was not running, and after a fresh install. Logs older than seven days are deleted, so a fault from last week cannot be exported and is best described in words.
