Create a workspace and switch between them
You start with one workspace, Personal, and you can add as many more as you want. The one you are in is always shown at the top of the main window's sidebar, and that control is also how you switch.
Create a workspace
Section titled “Create a workspace”- In the main window, click the workspace shown at the top of the sidebar.
- Choose New Workspace….
- In the sheet titled New workspace, type a Name and pick a Color. If the new workspace will be fourth in the list, the sheet says Switch to it with ⌘⌥4.
- Click Create workspace. Recordstead switches you into it.
Two workspaces may carry the same name. Recordstead tells them apart by the color square, not by the name, so give a color to anything you will have to pick out of a list in a hurry.
The Workspace menu in the menu bar lists your workspaces so you can switch between them, but it does not create them. Creating starts from the sidebar.
Switch between them
Section titled “Switch between them”Any of these:
- Click the workspace at the top of the sidebar and choose another one.
- Choose Workspace in the menu bar and pick one.
- Use the workspace row in the menu-bar panel. This is how you switch while the main window is closed.
- Press ⌘⌥1 through ⌘⌥9.
The shortcut follows a workspace's position in the list, not its name, so the order in Manage Workspaces is the assignment. From the tenth workspace on there is no shortcut, and the list shows none.
Rename one, or change the order
Section titled “Rename one, or change the order”- Click the workspace at the top of the sidebar and choose Manage Workspaces…. A window titled Manage Workspaces opens.
- Drag rows into the order you want. The window says so: Drag to reorder. The order sets the ⌘⌥ shortcuts.
- To change a name or a color, use the rename button at the right of the row. The sheet is titled Rename workspace and its button is Save.
Personal carries a Default badge and has no delete button, because it is where Recordstead falls back and where a deleted workspace's content can be sent. See Delete a workspace.
If the name will not take
Section titled “If the name will not take”Create workspace stays unavailable until the name holds at least one character that is not a space. There is nothing else to satisfy: a workspace needs only a name.
Result
Section titled “Result”The workspace you wanted exists, the sidebar shows which one you are in, and the first nine are one keystroke away.
